Weekly Textile Construction #17

Well I am a bit behind in posting my weekly experiments but I will get caught up in time.

I love this little piece. Once again I returned to a piece of the original fabric I salvaged from the scrap bag and then discharged and painted. I like the shapes and the variety of shades and tones from just two colors of dye and I like the thread work.

I used the dense quilting I have been exploring and tried a more random type of line that looks something like brambles. I often use variegated thread for this type of quilting but I decided to use solid colors this time to keep things simple and strong. I used yellow/green, white, beige and dark brown.

My intention is to try this type of patterning and composition on a larger scale but my first attempt at that was a mess. I had massive undissolved dye resulting in speckles everywhere. OOPS

Me and my Mom - 92 and going strong

I don't usually put anything on my blog except studio things but I decided to share something special. Last Monday was my mother's 92nd Birthday. She lives nearby and is doing exceptionally well. She was born in 1917 and weighed around 2 pounds. Shortly after her birth, the doctor put her in a shoebox and sort of put her aside to take care of my Grandmother because he did not expect mother to live. Well she fooled everyone and for weeks afterward, people from the little neighborhood where she lived came over to see this tiny little person. I have a cap her grandmother made for her to keep her head warm and you can't even put it on an average sized orange! She has lived a good life and is as much herself today as ever. Happy Birthday Mom.

On Monday I will be posting a new version of the project from Compositional Conversation as presented by Judi Hurwitt. Hope you will join me then:)
