New Work - Part I

This week artists were notified of the jury results for Quilt National.  My work was not selected.   I was not surprised and not overly disappointed as there are always other opportunities.

After the results for this show there is alway lots of discussion about getting in or not getting in and  about the jurors choices etc.  All of this makes me think that perhaps we are putting way too much importance on this one show.  It's a good show with a wonderful history but it's still just one show.  The jurors are charged with quickly sorting through a huge entry and trying to make (I guess) some sort of co-hesive exhibition.  The part that interest me is the approach of some of the artists who enter. If I understand what I've read, many people actually make work specifically for QN.  I confess that this makes me uncomfortable.  I'd prefer to think that we just make our work and then choose from what we have to make our entries.  The difference in the two approaches for me is one of freedom in my own studio.  Do you actually make work you would not have made if you weren't going to enter this show?

I've always felt that one of the most joyous things about being an artist is being able to make what you want to make and not worry too much about what happens after that.  This may not be what happens if you earn your living from your art or if you have a gallery who demands certain types of work from you.  I don't earn my living from my art and I don't currently have a gallery.

Actually I had not intended to enter QN this year but I did make a couple of entries to other shows late this summer and when I realized I still had Nyx available I changed my mind.  For those of you who have been reading along with me the past couple of months you know that I broke my arm in June.  That event really set me back in the studio.  I had all this fabric ready to use and when I was able I began working again.  The work came together quickly and I decided it was of a quality to be entered into a show and this piece completed my QN entry.

Wikipedia defines Nyx as Latin for Greek goddess of the night.  "A shadowy figure, Nyx stood at or near the beginning of creation and was the mother of Hypnos (sleep) and Thanatos (death).  Her appearances in mythology are sparse, but reveal her as a figure of exeptional power and beauty.  She Is found in the shadows of the world and only ever seen in glimpses."

Tomorrow I'll show you that piece named Selena.
