How to Mount Flat Textiles

Painted Desert II - 14" x 14"

fabric, dye, discharge, stitching

I'm pleased to announce that my work, Painted Desert II, has been selected for Transformation, Community and Self.  This exhibition is a juried competition sponsored and hosted by the Herring Center for Continuing Education on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, SC.

Originally the work had been mounted directly to a piece of rag board, framed with a mat for display in a deep glazed frame.   It looked nice but as I reviewed the piece in preparation for delivery to the show, I decided I wanted to try something different.  With this in mind I researched the topic and found a nice article written by Ann Frisina, textile conservator for the Minnesota Historical Society that presented a simple and archival method of presenting textile pieces.  You can find the information HERE.

I'll leave the details of the process to the PDF file you can get from the above link, but basically it involves a simple "pillow" style envelope made in a quality fabric (I used off-white linen.) into which the mat board is inserted.  The textile piece is then position on the face of the board and stitched under the edge so the stitching doesn't show.  This board is then inserted in the glazed frame.  Quick, simple, beautiful and archival.
