Overview of 50/50 Gold: The Art of Tom Dimond and Terry Jarrard-Dimond

On September 7, 2018 my husband, Tom Dimond, and I will celebrate the significant milestone of having been married and making art together for 50 years. The celebration is  in the form of an exhibition at Anderson Art Center in Anderson, SC. titled, 50/50 Gold 1968 - 2018: Tom Dimond and Terry Jarrard-Dimond. The following is a overview of what will be in the show and a bit about how our work has developed as seen by Mike Vatalaro.  Mike is an Emeritus Professor of Art, Clemson University, a former colleague of Tom's and my primary professor from my MFA studies at Clemson.  Thank you Mike for your thoughts and support.

Hope you enjoy and if you are in the area the show will be open through October 25th.

Tom Dimond - 2016
Mixed Media Collage - 30" x 22"

Tom Dimond and Terry Jarrard-Dimond, two prolific artists who have been married and working alongside each other for over fifty years have contributed significantly to the SC art scene.  I have had the great privileged of knowing them for forty of those years.  Both artists share a dedication to the creative exploration of mediums, inventive work processes and complex visual structures.  Individually, their emphasis, balance and choices are quite different, resulting in an exhibition of original imagery and a strong individual style.

Tom’s two-dimensional work has progressed through five mediums. Each medium is imaginatively explored through color interaction, geometric structure and their variations.  His masterful use of color and layered complexity is revealed consistently.  The size and scale of the works vary significantly as do his compositions from nuanced geometric patterns to complex gestural layered paintings to expressive reworked monotypes. His interest in popular culture from comics to found objects are embedded in these rich visual compositions.

Terry Jarrard-Dimond - 2018
Acrylic on paper - 30" x 22"

Terry’s work has a broad range of both 2D and 3D interests grounded in material explorations, fabrication processes and physical structure.  The sculptural fiber works segued into pedestal and wall structures of metal and wood.  Throughout her work, these materials are uniquely revealed and re-envisioned for the viewer.  The impressive tapestry sized wall pieces celebrate color and shape interaction overlaid with linear stitching providing an intimate graphic read.  Her intuitive explorations continue and have recently resulted in a focused exploration of rich textural paintings on both fabric and wood panels.

This 50/50 Gold’68- ‘18 The Art of Tom Dimond and Terry Jarrard-Dimond exhibition provides a rare opportunity to view their work side by side, and see how the work has evolved, grown and perhaps intersected with each other’s imagery over time. This exhibition successfully reveals crossover elements and shared interests while celebrating two very original and accomplished artists.
