Vadim Katznelson

 Blend - Vadim Katznelson
acrylic - polymer gel on board
21" x 9.5", 2012

This week I have been featuring artists from the Roy Boyd Gallery.  There has been something about the work of each artists that for me, connect the work at least visually, with textile materials.  My last artist is Vadim Katznelson whose focus, according to the gallery, is "pushing the paint".

Polar Moment - Vadim Katznelson
acrylic paint and mixed media on board
43" x 66", 2010

The gallery states that there is no element other than paint used in the making of these objects.  Despite that knowledge, I can not look at these works without seeing the potential for working with fabric in a similar manner.  There is no disrespect intended to Katznelson and the process he has developed.  I love it, especially the shiny surfaces and the smears of colors.

Joan Livingstone

Odds and Ends - Joan Livingstone
Felt/Dye/Thread/Acrylic Paint/Grommets
44" x 144" x 3", 2005

Joan Livingstone is the third artist I'm featuring this week from the Roy Boyd Gallery in Chicago, IL.  I mentioned in my previous posts that one of the connecting threads between the works I've selected has to do with the visual appearance of the work in that it appears it could have been made using textile materials.  Joan Livingstone's work IS made from textile materials.

Migrations 5.58 - Joan Livingstone
Felt/Thread/Grommets
64" x 67" x 7", 2005

I believe my first introduction to Livingstone's work was a description of a workshop at Haystack school on Deer Island, ME.  I loved the edges of the work and the textural surfaces.  This work has strong references to skins/pelts/hides.  It is mysterious and beautifully constructed.  She also makes sculpture but the references to fabric and stitching can be clearly seen.

When you visit Livingstones personal website, give the program time to start as there is an interesting slide show of her work on the homepage.  This slide presentation gives a good idea of the breath of her work.

Sue Benner

Cellular Structures V (2+3)
Sue Benner

2007 - 39.75" x 50"
dye and paint on fabric (silk, cotton, polyester, commercial and found
fabrics, recycled clothing), fused, mono-printed, machine quilted

Cellular Structures V (2=3) is from my favorite series of works by Sue Benner.  The work is energized and bursting out of the picture plane.  In addition to her artistic talent, Sue is an accomplished teacher and keeps a very full workshop schedule.

John O'Connell

Between Breaths - John O'Connell
Mixed Media on canvas - 72" x 84"

This is the first post of some of my favorite works discovered via Pinterest.

I am intrigued by the surfaces and layers of this work.  Here is an excerpt from John O'Connell's Artist Statement.

"In my work as in a dream, all things become me and I become them.  I am the painted moments frozen in time.  I am the abstracted field built layer upon layer as an accumulated history, only to be lost and obscured by the relentless layering of the next moment."

Do You Know About Pinterest?

Scrapbooks have been around for a long time and very fashionable in the crafts world for many years.  I have one my mother kept and one I began in high school but haven't had the time or interest to start one until recently when I discovered Pinterest.  Most likely you know about this site and perhaps have an account.  My first glimpse left me "nonplussed"....  I didn't get it.  It just seemed like a site where people were posting images of stuff they wanted to buy.  Well that is true in many cases but that is only a small part of how to use this site.

Weeks later I returned to the the site and began to read and realized there is a ton of art presented there and it's a wonderful way to compile digital scrapbooks (Pinterest calls them boards) of art you like, love, admire or otherwise have an interest in.  I'm not going to go into detail about how this works but basically you "pin" images from other sites you find online onto your boards.  If someone wants to know more about the images they can click on it and they will be taken to the the location where you  found the image thus opening the door for a viewer to become better acquainted with your work.  Other people on Pinterest can also "repin" the image onto their boards.

I haven't had any detailed discussions with anyone about how they feel about having their images pinned on these boards but my personal feeling is that it's free promotion for the artists.  As long as no one is making money from this or putting your art onto mugs, t-shirts, decorative pillows or textured art boards I'm ok with it.  If you don't want your work pinned it's easy enough to block people from taking images from websites.

It has been very interesting to go back and look at what I have personally pinned.  It gives you a clear snapshot of what is catching your eye.  It also reminds you how much wonderful work is being made.  Right now I need to create more boards with more specific categories as the number of pins is growing.

With all this beautiful work now identified I've decided to do a series here at Studio 24-7 of some of the artists whose work I've been introduced to via Pinterest.  Each post will have one image, a link to the artists site if I can find one and some comment as to why I feel the work is interesting, exciting, beautiful, challenging, unusual etc. or perhaps something more to encourage you to visit their website.  Hope you'll enjoy the collection.  This adventure will start soon.
