Artist's Apron Auction A Success

My contribution to the Apron Auction

Last week I posted a picture of myself in an unadorned black artists apron of the type many people wear when working in the studio.  Now you can see how I "enhanced" that time honored article of studio wear for the scholarship auction at Quilting by the Lake.

My theme was  Cinco de Mayo and the apron featured fabric with "south of the boarder" flower and geometric designs, an image of Our Lady of Guadeloupe , two crystal studded skulls, a first place blue ribbon (which I gave myself) and tiny LED flashing lights which don't show here as tiny specks of light.  Oh, I almost forgot, a large paper flower for my hair which the winning bidder also received.

There were 8 instructors during the week and each made an apron.  You can see from the above picture that there were many styles to choose from.  The sale of the 8 aprons collectively brought in over $3,000 which will go toward scholarships for next years event.  This week is the second week of QBL and there will be another auction at the close of the session.

Before the auction each class was invited to the stage to show samples of work done during the week.  My class was Line As Language. These are some of my students who made boards with samples showing the variety ways line can work in compositions.

We worked in both black and white as well as color.  The group was fun, hard working and talented.  Thank you to each of my students for choosing to be with me for the week.

My Life As an Apron Artist

What will appear on this apron?

This week I am teaching at Quilting By The Lake sponsored by The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center.  The event is held at Onondagh Community College in Syracuse, NY.

One of the fun events is a fundraiser where artist's aprons with the QBL logo are "enhanced" by the workshop instructors and auctioned off.  The proceeds are used to provide scholarships for the summer program. The above picture was from a couple of years ago and I have removed the art that had been stitched for that year's auction.  (Thanks photoshop!)  This year's apron is much more complex and on a fun theme from south of the boarder.  Whoever acquires this baby will be the hostess with the mostest at least one day a year when they put on The apron and have some fun.  OK....if any of you heavy hitters are reading please fluff up your check books and come prepared to bid!

Last evening I presented a talk to the entire group of workshop attendees.  The talk was. "Self-Critique".  It was a pleasure sharing some of the thoughts about how artists evaluate their work.

QBL 2014 Workshops Announced

This week I received the 2014 Quilting by the Lake workshop catalog and was very happy to see an example (pictured above) of my work featured on the cover.

I will be teaching Line As Language during the first session of the program, July 13 - 18, 2014.  I first taught this class during 2012 at QBL2 as a 3 day workshop.  The class was well received and has been expanded to 5 days with all new exercises and of course, more time to explore the many applications of line in art.

LINE AS LANGUAGE

The focus of this workshop is on the study and application of one of the basic elements of design - LINE.  Dramatic or understated, frantic or languid, Line can be the focus of a composition or a solid supporting player.  Learn how to incorporate line to tell your story using machine piecing and applique.  Work directly with fabric as well as studies created in cut and painted paper to be finalized in fabric.  Work will be made in black & white as well as color. Group and individual discussion will be an important part of this class.  Design is the foundation for great work.  I embrace creativity and work from a base of encouragement for all students.

Quilting By the Lake Apron Auction

Auction Apron

This weekend I head to Onondaga Community College to teach a class for Quilting By The Lake. This event is organized by The Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, NY and is a well respected and beautifully run series of workshops, exhibitions and lectures.

One of the fun events every year is the auctioning of studio aprons embellished by the workshop instructors. The money raised from the auction goes toward scholarships for deserving students to next's years' workshops.

I decided to stitch a section of a pieced composition under the apron pockets along the hem. The fabric is hand dyed and machine pieced. It has also been quilted. If any of you attend I hope you bring your checkbooks and are ready to get in on the fun.

I'm hoping to be able to post a few images from the workshop so I'll see you next week from New York State.

New Student Scholarship for Quilting by the Lake 2011

Quilting by the Lake workshops is a well established textile arts event sponsored by The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY. They have just completed another successful year and are gearing up for the Fall QBL2 workshops as well as the larger event next spring 2011.

One of the excellent components of this program is their scholarship program which awards approximately 10 scholarships each year which covers the fee for one class choosen by each of the recepients. The scholarships are funded through an auction held at the end of the workshop sessions. The past few years each instructor has created a unique apron featuring their work and these items have been well received with fast and furious bidding by workshop participants.

Generally the scholarships are awarded to women 50 and over because that is who attends this event. This year the organization is reaching out to younger women to come and joint the excitment of working with fabric and a New Scholarship for women under the age of 25 has been created.

This year Kerby and Laura Smith were part of the faculty and they each created aprons for the auction. After discussion with Donna Lamb, Director of the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, they decided to earmark the proceeds raised from their aprons to go toward a new scholarship aimed at attracting young artists. They felt strongly that we should cultivate a younger generation of fiber artists.

I think this is an exciting concept and a wonderful opportunity both for the recepients of this award and for the community of artists working in textiles. While individual need is a component of the scholarship, each person who applies must write a statement as to why they want to attend and why they want to study with the instructor they have choosen. This is a "blind" application process so the selection committee is not aware of who you are when you apply. So.........

The deadline for scholarship applications is October 15, 2010 for the summer 2011 sessions. Here is a link to the application:
